CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State swimming & diving team concluded competition in the 2013 Jade Hape Dowd Nike Cup Invitational on Saturday, hosted by North Carolina.

The men’s squad posted a second-place finish with a three-day total of 1554 points, while the women’s squad finished third with a total score of 1480. North Carolina captured the title in the men’s and women’s competition.

“Today was a good conclusion to the Nike Cup for the Wolfpack program,” said head coach Braden Holloway. “We had a lot of ups and downs throughout the weekend, especially today. The team came together and rallied around each other. This is a meet where we try different things and make adjustments to be better.”

Freshman Alexia Zevnik led the way for the Wolfpack women in the 200 backstroke with a fifth-place finish timed at 1:59.61, while Hannah Freyman finished sixth in the ‘A’ final with a time of 1:59.85. On the men’s side Michael Camper paced the squad with a fifth-place finish, tapping the wall in 1:48.71.

A native of Verona, Italy, senior Jonathan Boffa finished second overall in the men’s 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 43.70. Freshman Andreas Schiellerup (43.97), Simonas Bilis (44.88) and David Williams (45.05) also competed in the ‘A’ final and finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Pack also had three swimmers compete in the ‘A’ final of the women’s 100 freestyle. Zevnik was the top finisher for the squad with a time of 50.30, while Lotta Nevalainen posted a seventh-place finish in 50.86 and Freyman finished eighth in 51.23.

In the 200 butterfly, sophomore Christian McCurdy finished fourth overall with a time of 1:48.23.

The meet concluded with the men’s 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Bilis, Williams, Schiellerup and Boffa finishing first overall with a time of 2:54.42. The Wolfpack women’s squad also posted a strong finish in the event, as Nevalainen, Koletic, Freyman and Zevnik teamed up to finish second with a time of 3:20.82.

“We had a lot of spirit on deck to close out the meet,” Holloway said. “It was great to end off on a positive note with the relays. They’re going a lot quicker than they were at this point last year.

“The parent group upstairs was awesome. It was very nice to have that parent support. We have to continue to get better and get back to work, analyze our weekend, where we were good and where we were not, and move forward.”

In diving, Madeline Keeley finished fifth with a total score of 181.0 in the women’s platform competition held at Duke’s Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion, while Grant Saale registered a final score of 273.70 to finish fourth in the men’s competition.

“The divers had a solid performance today on platform,” said head diving coach Josh Karshen. “It was a long weekend and they continued to battle. I thought it went well for their first platform meet of the year. They’ll have a few days of training and a nice break for Thanksgiving and then we’ll get back to work.”

Up next, the Pack will compete at the Winter National Championships held from Dec. 5-7 in Knoxville, Tenn.
