Swimming & Diving Set for Final Weekend of Regular Season
Jan. 30, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State swimming & diving team will conclude its 2013-14 regular season with a pair of meets this weekend. The Pack will open the weekend with a dual meet at rival North Carolina on Friday, Jan. 31 slated for 5 p.m., before hosting Virginia in its senior meet on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m.
State returns to action following a successful outing at Minnesota last weekend, where the men’s and women’s squad combined to win five of eight relay events throughout the two-day dual against the Golden Gophers.
The Tar Heels enter Friday’s meet with a 5-2 record on the men’s side and a No. 16 ranking, while the woman’s squad is listed No. 7 in the country with a 7-2 record. Last season, UNC defeated the Pack by a narrow margin in each competition.
"There is nothing like traveling up Tobacco Road to face North Carolina,” said head coach Braden Holloway. “They’re a well-coached program and have all areas covered and it should be a great challenge for the Pack. Since I returned as coach at NC State, the dual meets between our programs have been nothing short of exciting and fun with tremendous environments and I’m sure this meet will be no different.
“They have some great depth to compliment their prime contributors and we’ll need our role players to rise up in order to challenge them. This is the last weekend of dual meets for our seniors and their last one on the road, so we would like to send them out on a great note."
Virginia comes to Raleigh with a No. 9 ranking on the women’s side and a No. 20 listing on the men’s side. The two program’s last met in a head-to-head dual during the 2011-12 season, with Virginia pulling out victories in both competitions.
Saturday’s meet against the Cavaliers will see the program’s 13 seniors recognized prior to the competition.
"We’ll welcome the Cavaliers to our home pool on Saturday, as well as cherish and celebrate the journey of our senior class,” Holloway said. “This class of Zina Grogg, Kaitlin Mills, Kelsey Liu, Bailey Woodling, Ian Bishop, Jonathan Boffa, Kohl Hurdle, Max Litvinov, Jake Matysek, Barrett Miesfeld, Matt Thomas, Andrew Tollefson and Brian Via, has seen our program grow and they’ve been great leaders and mentors to our young student-athletes. With the defending ACC Champions coming in, I can't think of a better way for our seniors to lead us one more time at home.
“The Virginia teams are tough competitors as they show time and time again, so our team will need to be all for one come Saturday.”
T-shirts and food will be available to all fans in attendance, while supplies last. In addition, the meet will also serve as Y-Guide day, as all Y-Guides in attendance will receive an NC State patch.
Live stats for the Virginia meet will be available via the Meet Mobile app for iPhone and Android.
