March 5, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's swimming & diving team improved to No. 5 in the country, as released in the latest College Swimming rankings. The Wolfpack women's squad is also listed 19th by the same publication. The ranking for each team is the highest mark for the program in the history of the College Swimming poll, which began in the 2012-13 season.
The No. 5 listing for the men's squad comes in as the highest ranked Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) school in the poll, as a total of five ACC squads appear in the top 25. Virginia Tech is listed 12th, while Virginia (No. 13), Notre Dame (No. 16) and North Carolina (No. 17) round out the conference schools among the top 25.
The men's team is coming off an impressive second-place showing in the ACC Championships last week in Greensboro, totaling school records in 15 events and recording NCAA automatic qualifying marks in a total of 11 events. The squad captured four of the five relay titles contested throughout the week, while Christian McCurdy led the squad with two victories in individual events.
The 19th-ranked women's squad is one of five ACC schools listed in the top 25 of the ledger.
The Wolfpack women completed their ACC Championships with a fourth-place finish and captured the gold medal in the 200 free relay for the second straight season. The squad broke a total of 15 school records and set 64 all-time top 10 times in the program's record books.
The women's squad will compete in the 2014 NCAA Championships from March 20-22 in Minneapolis, Minn.
