RALEIGH, N.C. - 20 members of the NC State swim team will travel to the Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix this weekend, in an attempt to secure cuts for the upcoming Olympic trials. The meet will take place at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
The competition will run from Friday, May 11, until Sunday, May 13. Preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. each day, with finals starting at 6 p.m.
Eight members of the women's squad, Hannah Freyman, Zina Grogg, Marifrances Henley, Katelyn Linker, Kelsey Liu, Kaitlin Mills, Lauren Poli and Julianna Prim will all be participating in the competition. Jonathan Boffa, Michael Camper, Tyler Early, Taylor Harris, Ivan Kopas, Maxim Litvinov, Joe Martin, Jake Matysek, Barrett Miesfeld, John Newell, David Williams and Gerard Woody will represent the men's team.
On the women's side, Grogg, Linker and Prim will swim in the butterfly events. Prim all three butterfly events- the 50, 100 and 200. Grogg, the school record holder in the 100 butterfly, will partake in the 50 and 100 butterfly, while Linker will compete in the 200 fly.
Prim will also compete in the 200 freestyle, along with Henley.
Aside from the 200 freestyle, Henley will also participate in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. She already has an Olympic trials cut in the 100 freestyle, and will look to hit the standards for the 50 and 200 freestyle this weekend. Henley owns the school record in the 200 freestyle
Freyman, the school record holder in the 100 freestyle, will join Henley in the 50 and 100 freestyle. She will also participate in both the 50 and 100 backstroke, as will Grogg and Mills. Mills will swim the 200 backstroke as well.
Linker will be the lone member from the women's team swimming in the 400 individual medley.
Poli and Liu will represent the women in the breaststroke events. Poli will compete in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke, while Liu will swim the 200 breaststroke. On the men's side, Litvinov, Matysek and Harris will participate in the 200 breaststroke. Matysek will also partake in the 100.
Harris will also participate in the 200 and 400 individual medley events.
Boffa and Williams will compete in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle. Boffa has already hit Olympic trials cuts in both the 100 and 200 freestyle. He achieved those standards at this meet last year. Joining the duo in the 50 freestyle will be Martin, Miesfeld and Woody. Early will also participate in the 200 freestyle.
In addition to the 50 freestyle, Miesfeld will swim the 50 and 100 butterfly. Joining him in the butterfly events will be Newell, who will compete in the 100 and 200.
In the backstroke events, Kopas and Camper will compete in the 50, 100 and 200. Harris will take part in the 200 backstroke as well. Camper will also swim the 400 individual medley and the 1,500 free.
