Swimming & Diving Names Captains for 2009-10
RALEIGH, N.C. NC State head swimming and diving coach Brooks Teal has appointed team captains for the upcoming 2009-10 season. Jen Kopenitz and Sarah Merritt will hold the honor for the women’s program, while Mason McGee and Ben Mechak will carry the distinction for the men’s program.
“Both sets of captains will do a great job of setting a high standard for their teammates, in and out of the water,” said Teal.
Kopenitz already has five top-10 all-time individual times throughout her career at NC State, including second in the 200 backstroke (2:00.27), second in the 400 IM (4:19.90), fourth in the 200 IM (2:04.10), seventh in the 100 backstroke (57.72) and ninth in the 200 butterfly (2:04.22). She also swam on the record-holding 800 freestyle relay (7:23.95) squad.
A two-time ACC Honor Roll student-athlete, Merritt posted the third best 500 freestyle (5:03.22) last year, a season after posting the second fastest clips in both the 100 (1:08.10) and 200 breaststrokes (2:24.01).
“Sarah and Jen will provide great leadership for our women,” said Teal. “Both are respected and trusted by their teammates and the coaching staff, and I am confidant they will play an instrumental role in our success next year.”
McGee holds school records in both the 200 freestyle (1:35.96) and 500 freestyle (4:20.60) and is a part of the school record 800 freestyle relay (6:29.84) squad. He also stands ninth all-time in the 1650 freestyle with a 15:30.48.
Mechak has the seventh quickest 200 backstroke (1:47.48) in school history, in addition to posting the second fastest 100 backstroke (50.12) and third quickest 500 freestyle (4:31.22) marks on the roster last year.
“Mason and Ben will do an excellent job in leading our men,” said Teal. “Their leadership skills will set the tone for our team to achieve their goals.”
