July 29, 2012
LONDON, England -- Former NC State swimmer Cullen Jones and his Team USA teammates seemed to be inching closer to another gold medal in the event, but France's relay team stormed back to take the lead down the home stretch.
Team USA finished with a time of 3:10.38 to take a silver medal, while France claimed the gold with a time of 3:09.93 and Russia took Bronze with a 3:11.41 clocking.
Nathan Adrian swam the opening leg of the relay followed by Michael Phelps and Jones with Ryan Lochte swimming the anchor leg. Jones covered the first 50 meters of his leg in 22.07 seconds and the other in 25.53 for a combined split of 47.60 seconds, which was the second fastest time on the team just behind Michael Phelps who posted a 47.15.
The Americans led for most of the race, but Lochte was edged down the stretch by Yannick Agnel of France.
Jones returns to the pool on Tuesday, July 31, to swim the 100 meter freestyle and Thursday, August 2, for the 50 meter freestyle.
