KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - NC State redshirt junior Rachel Mumma enjoyed a successful weekend on the diving boards at the 2014 AT&T U.S. National Championships, where she placed fifth overall in the one-meter springboard competition.
"Rachel [Mumma] had a tremendous week at Nationals," said head diving coach Josh Karshen. "She had some phenomenal dives and she also had to battle for some dives. I'm very proud of how she stayed focused and fought hard for every point she got throughout a very long week of competition."
A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Mumma finished with a finals score of 254.75 on her list of five dives. Her highest scoring dive in the finals came on her final attempt, where she totaled a 58.50 on a forward 1-½ somersault 2 twist with a 2.6-degree of difficulty. Her fifth-place finish is an improvement from seventh overall a year ago on the one-meter.
Mumma earned her way into the finals after finishing sixth in the preliminary rounds with a 263.00 total score.
The redshirt junior also had a successful showing in the three-meter event, where she advanced to the semifinals and placed 15th overall with a score of 254.70.
Mumma will return to competition for the Pack this season, after sitting out the 2013-14 campaign as a redshirt. During the 2012-13 season, Mumma advanced to the NCAA Diving Championships on the one-meter springboard. She also recorded the top individual score for the Pack in the event, tallying a 308.02 total score against North Carolina.
