Swim & DivingTeams to Host Campbell, Duke Friday
RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs will be in action this Friday, Oct. 26, at the Casey Natatorium on the NC State campus in Raleigh. Both teams will take on Duke, while the women will also compete against Campbell. Action is slated to begin at 5 p.m. The event will mark State’s first foray into ACC competition on the young season.
The Wolfpack men stand at 2-0 after topping East Carolina (204-96) and William & Mary (234-64) last Saturday in Greenville. The men got several sterling performances, including Stephen Mellor winning the 200-backstroke (1:50.05), 200-butterfly (1:50.72) and the 200-IM (1:54.04), as well as Austin Hampton taking both the 3-meter (337.35) and 1-meter (324.90) dives.
The women’s squad post a 1-1 record after splitting with ECU and W&M, falling to the Pirates (174-124) and downing the Tribe (194-106) last week. Anna Linkenauger finished in the top-three during all three times she took to the pool, while Jennifer Kopenitz grabbed a first-place finish and two second-place nods. Jessica Ward grabbed top-five finishes in each of her three individual events.
The Duke men’s (1-0) and women’s (2-0) teams opened their seasons with solid victories a week ago, as both squads downed UNC Wilmington, while the women also topped Richmond. Andy Osterland and Spencer Booth each won two events for the Blue Devil men’s group, while Ashley Twichell set a school record in the 1000-free by nearly seven second with a 9:59.15 time.
The Campbell women stand at 2-0 after topping Radford and VMI a week ago. Ashlyn Stumpf, Heidi Shallow and Jackie Kenline all collected two first place finishes, and Courtney Wetherell, Patricia Jimenez and Kelly Mullican added each grabbed one.
Following Friday’s action, NC State will return to the water at the Georgia Tech Invite in Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 16-18.
