Pack Wraps Up Conference Dual Meet
DURHAM, N.C. The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished what it started yesterday by completing a conference dual meet with Duke and Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 1. The men downed both the Blue Devils (201-151) and the Terrapins (198-151), while the women fell to Duke (216-137) and Maryland (189-162).
The Wolfpack men move to 4-1 (2-1 ACC), while the women now stand at 3-3 (1-3 ACC).
Stephen Mellor, Dan Forsythe, Taylor Goodwin and Conor Brennan took third in the 200-medley relay on a 1:34.08, before Andrew Lester (4:02.74), Kevin Woodhull-Smith (4:03.27) and Mason McGee (4:06.93) grabbed the top three positions in the 400 IM. Gaites Brown (47.21) and Andrew Keenan (47.27) then finished sixth and seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Mellor won the 200 backstroke with a 1:48.94, while Ben Mechak (1:54.10) and Goodwin (1:54.26) placed third and fifth respectively. In the 100 butterfly Mike Seiferth wound up fourth with a 52.67, before Lester (4:34.29) and McGee (4:34.60) collected the top two spots in the 500 freestyle. Austin Hampton won the 1-meter dive with a 344.15, and Alex Dambly’s 314.40 was good for third.
Forsythe picked up another Wolfpack win with a 2:08.23 in the 200 breaststroke, while Jon Vorpagel (2:10.75) and Danny Voss (2:11.03) finished fifth and sixth. State’s B’ relay of Keenan, Brown, Brennan and McGee took fourth in the 400 freestyle relay on a 3:08.10 to end the meet.
In the women’s 200-medley relay Erica Smith, Jessica Ward, Patrice Dason and Ashley Richter wound up third with a 1:47.24, while Katie Robinson, Meg Thompson, Alli Hagan and Lucy Lindsey followed just behind on a 1:50.25. Anna Linkenauger then won the 400 IM with a 4:25.43, while Jen Kopenitz (4:31.78) and Maresa Like-Mathews (4:32.99) took third and fourth.
Richter (52.37), Lindsey (53.26) and Amanda Panty (53.56) placed second, fourth and fifth respectively in the 100 freestyle, as Kopenitz’s 2:06.07 was fourth in the 200 backstroke. Dason (57.11) and Thompson (57.75) wound up fourth and fifth in the 100 butterfly, while Linkenauger (5:00.98) and Maggie McEnerney (5:08.79) took third and sixth in the 500 freestyle.
Kristin Davies (300.55) and Chelsea Ale (298.25) finished back-to-back at third and fourth in the 3-meter dive, just before Ward (2:21.64), Linkenauger (2:22.09) and Sarah Merritt (2:25.68) placed third, fourth and fifth in the 200 breaststroke. Competition ended with the 400 freestyle relay, with Panty, Thompson, Erica Waters and Richter taking fourth with a 3:32.16, while Dason, Brianna Grover, Smith and Lindsey’s 3:32.30 landed the foursome fifth.
NC State swimming and diving will return to the pool at the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md., Nov. 20-22.
