Men's Swimming & Diving Sweeps ACC Doubleheader
The NC State men’s swimming and diving team (2-1, 2-0 ACC) swept an ACC meet against Maryland and Duke in Durham, N.C. on Saturday night in impressive fashion. The Wolfpack defeated the Blue Devils, 209-90, and took out the Terrapins, 193-104. NC State won the first six events of the evening and never looked back and won 11 of the 14 events overall. Mason McGee, Steve Cowling and Stephen Mellor each won two events for the Pack.
After a win in the 200 medley relay (1:34.31) to get things started, the Wolfpack won the next five individual events with sophomore Andrew Lester getting things started by taking the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:38.24.
Freshman Mason McGee won the first of his two events on the evening with a win in the 200 freestyle (1:41.76) as fellow freshman Kevin Woodhull-Smith (1:42.56) and sophomore Jon Vorpagel (1:44.54) completed the 1-2-3 Wolfpack sweep in the event.
Senior Steve Cowling won his signature event, the 100 backstroke, in a time of 50.62.
Junior Jack Roney won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.64, and sophomore Stephen Mellor followed in the next event with a time of 1:52.53 in the 200 butterfly to win that event.
Freshman Travis Martinez finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.60, the second fastest time on the season so far for the Wolfpack. Juniors Dan Glauber (21.78) and Brian Crowder (21.94) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Sophomore standout diver Austin Hampton won the 1-meter event with an ACC-best 348.81, winning by over 33 points. Fellow sophomore diver Alexander Dambly finished third with a 307.05.
Mellor won his second event of the meet with a win in his best event, the 200 backstroke. Mellor swam a 1:50.68 to win the event with nearly a five second cushion over second place.
Roney finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:10.09 and freshman Danny Voss finished third in a time of 2:11.10.
McGee won his second event in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:39.25, the second fastest swim in the event on the team this season overall.
Cowling took his second event of the evening as well, winning the 100 butterfly in a time of 50.60.
In the final individual event of the evening, the Wolfpack finished 1-2-4 as Woodhull-Smith swam a 1:54.54 to take first, Mellor finished second with a 1:54.65 and Lester took fourth with a time of 1:56.27.
