Nov. 14, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State swimming & diving team will make a short trip over to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the 27th annual Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup Invitational. The meet will convene Thursday, Nov. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 17 in the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium, with preliminary rounds beginning daily at 10 a.m., and finals each night at 6 p.m.
"I think the kids are looking forward to the weekend and competing in an invitational where they will get a lot of opportunities to compete," said head coach Braden Holloway. "It's the last meet before the break, so it's the last chance they will get to see where they are."
State will be joined in the invitational by host UNC, East Carolina, Navy and Old Dominion. Northeastern will also compete on the women's side, while Drexel and James Madison will participate in diving events only.
"I think they're looking forward to competing against more than one school and I think we should do well," Holloway said.
The Wolfpack is coming off a pair of strong performances, both on the men's and women's teams. The women defeated Duke (181-113) and Miami (187-108), while the men overpowered Duke (178-117).
Junior Zina Grogg was rewarded for her performance in those meets, being named the Female Swimmer of the week by CollegeSwimming.com. The Pennsylvania native finished first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.93 seconds, and first in the 100 butterfly at 55.40.
The Pack men's team remains ranked among the top-25 in the national rankings, checking in at 16th in the most recent polls released by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
