Swimming & Diving to Host Virginia Tech on Saturday
RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host Virginia Tech on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. at Casey Natatorium. The event will serve as the last meet for the Pack during the 2007 calendar year.
State’s women carry a 2-2 (0-1 ACC) slate. Anna Linkenauger snagged an NCAA B’ standard at the GT Invite with a 2:03.82 in the 200-IM, missing the school record by a miniscule .8 seconds. Erica Smith recorded the second-best time in school history for the 100-back during the 400-medley relay, barely missing Erika Newell’s 56.08 by .10 seconds. Kristin Davies, who has also already qualified for the NCAA diving zones, leads the league in the platform dive with a 226.50. In addition to Davies, Chelsea Ale has also qualified for the NCAA diving zones.
The Wolfpack men are currently in second-place in the ACC standings with a 3-0 (1-0 ACC) record. Stephen Mellor hit three NCAA B’ cuts, and set new school records in the 200-IM (1:48.32) and 200-back (1:44.54) at the GT Invite on Nov. 16-18 in Atlanta, Ga. He owns the top time in the ACC in the 200-back, 200-IM and 400-IM (3:53.31), while Alex Dambly’s 267.55 in the platform dive is also a league-best. The Pack’s 6:39.12 in the 800-free relay is the top clip in the conference. Andrew Lester also owns an NCAA B’ cut with a 15:30.85 in the 1650-free, while Dambly and Austin Hampton have both already qualified for the NCAA diving zones.
The VT women hold a record of 7-2 (1-1 ACC). Jessica Botzum, who was named ACC women’s performer of the week on Oct. 16, post league-best marks in the 100-breast (1:01.84), 200-breast (2:14.06) and 200-IM (2:02.38). Megan Newell leads the conference in the 100-butter (54.22), and Sarah Milton does the same in the 3-meter dive (304.88). The Hokies 1:41.39 time in the 200-medley relay is the leading mark in the ACC.
The Hokie men stand at 5-3 (0-2 ACC). Scott Beard has been named ACC men’s performer of the week on two occasions this year (Oct. 30, Nov. 20). He owns the top mark in the ACC this year in both the 100-butter (47.57) and 100-back (48.59), as well as the third-best time in the 100-free with a 44.82. Kaan Tayla (50-free, 100-free), Trey Stewart (200-butter), and Mikey McDonald (1-meter dive) also post top marks in the conference, while Hokie relay squads post top-ACC times in the 200-free relay (1:19.98), 400-free relay (2:58.27), 200-medley relay (1:29.76) and 400-medley relay (3:18.35).
NC State will return to action in January of 2008 with two matches in two days at Casey Natatorium. State will take on Gardner-Webb on Friday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m., before welcoming Clemson on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m.
