    Diving Set To Compete At USA Nationals

    RALEIGH, N.C. – Four of NC State’s divers will return to action this week at the USA Diving Winter National Championships and World Cup Trials in Knoxville, Tenn. The Event will take place from December 15-22, and will serve as the final opportunity to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. It will also be used to select rosters for several 2012 international competitions, including the FINA World Cup in February.

    Hannah Hopkins, Rachel Mumma, Hudson Rains and Ryan Smith will all have the opportunity to compete in the event, facing some of the best competition in the nation. All four NC State divers will compete in the preliminaries to try and earn a spot into the quarterfinals.

    The number of spots available in the quarterfinals in each event varies based on the number of prequalified divers who have registered for the meet.  19 women and 20 men can advance from the preliminaries to the quarterfinals, while 6 women and 11 men can qualify from the preliminaries.

    Hopkins, Smith and Rains will all compete in the one-meter and three-meter events, while Mumma will compete only in the 3-meter.

    Preliminaries for the women’s three-meter springboard and the men’s one-meter springboard will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15. Preliminaries for the women’s one-meter springboard and the men’s three-meter springboard will be held on Friday, Dec. 16. Events will begin at 10 a.m. both days.

    Quarterfinals for the women’s one-meter will be held on Saturday, Dec. 17, followed by the quarterfinal for the men’s three-meter springboard on Sunday. The finals of the women’s one-meter springboard will also be held on Sunday. Semi-finals and finals of the men’s one-meter springboard will take place on Monday, Dec. 19.

    Quarterfinals of the women’s one-meter and men’s three-meter springboard will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Semi-finals for the women’s three-meter will be held on Wednesday, followed by the finals of both the women’s three-meter and men’s one-meter.
