CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – NC State senior Lawanda Henry and junior Karimah Shepherd won their events in Friday’s first day of action at the UNC Invitational indoor track meet at the Eddie Smith Field House.

Henry, the school-record holder and an All-ACC performer in the 20-pound weight throw, won that event with a toss of 60-feet, 8-inches, her second longest mark of the season. Redshirt freshmen teammates Tremanisha Taylor and Kortney Pearce were third and fourth in the event, respectively.

Taylor’s throw of 55-feet, 7 ¾-inches was her best of the season.

For the men, NC State redshirt freshmen Jule Rich set a new personal record with a throw of 57-feet, 3 ¾-inches, to finish second in the 35-pound weight throw. Teammates Grant Pearce and Nathaniel Williams were right behind him in third and fourth.

Shepherd had her best mark of the season in winning the long jump, with a leap of 20-feet, 1-inch. Wolfpack volunteer assistant and former athlete Demiracle Washington, competing as an unattached entry, was third in the event at 19-feet, 3 ½-inches.

Junior Kris Kornegay-Gober was fourth in the men’s long jump, followed by freshman Carl Marant in eighth and senior Kwame Boatwright in 11th.

The three newest members of the No. 24 ranked men’s team – football players Tobais Palmer, C.J. Wilson and Bryan Underwood – had successful debuts in their first meet of the season. Palmer finished second in the finals of the 60-meter dash, with a time of 6.91 seconds. He had the best qualifying time at 6.95 seconds.

Underwood narrowly missed qualifying for the finals, finishing ninth with a time of 7.166 seconds. Wilson was 11th at 7.22 seconds.

Junior Paige Eley also had the best qualifying time in the women’s 60 meters, at 7.73 seconds. She was third in the finals at 7.71.

Senior Amira Chowyuk also finished second in the women’s 600 meters with a time of 1:38.95.
