Perry Wins Pentathlon on First Day of Hilton Garden Invitational
Feb. 1, 2013 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Competing in her first collegiate pentathlon, freshman Alexis Perry captured the victory in the event on the opening day of the Hilton Garden Invitational, Friday afternoon. Perry amassed 3,477 total points over the course of the pentathlon, which is comprised of the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800-meter run. Perry accumulated 1,008 points with her first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line with a time of 8.54. Her 5’ 2.00” leap in the high jump ranked third, and her 29’ 4.00” toss in the shot put earned her 724 and 460 points, respectively. The Durham, N.C., native went on to win the long jump with a 19’ 1.25” measurement for another 795 points, before capturing 490 additional points in the final event; the 800-meter run. Redshirt freshman Nicole Chavis picked up her second victory in the women’s weight throw this season with a toss of 59’ 9.75”, while redshirt freshmen SeQuoia Watkins recorded a season-best 54’ 9.25” throw in the event to finish fifth. Chavis also won the event at the season-opening JDL Fast Track Kick-Off meet also held in Winston-Salem on Dec. 1.
