NEW YORK – NC State redshirt senior Ryan Hill wasn’t satisfied with just receiving an invitation to the 106th Millrose Games to compete in the spectacle’s most prestigious event, as he ran a 3:54.89 mile and finished sixth overall in the Wanamaker Mile at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory.
The time was the fastest ever by a collegiate miler to hail from the state of North Carolina, surpassing Tony Waldrop's 3:55.0 mark. Hill's mark is the fourth fastest in history by a collegian, and the second fastest by an American runner at the college level. Hill's time also broke his own NC State program record of 3:58.33, which he set in 2012.
Lopez Lomong set the new track record, winning the race with a time of 3:51.21. He was followed by Matthew Centrowitz (3:51.34), Ciaran O’Lionaird (3:52.10), Chris O’Hare (3:52.98) and Lawi Lalang (3:54.56) to round out the top five.
A Hickory, N.C., native, Hill currently owns the fastest 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter times in the ACC this season. The four-time track & field All-American will return to action at next weekend’s ACC Indoor Championships in Blacksburg, Va., Feb 22-24.
