Taylor Sets School Record, Wins Discus at Penn Relays
April 27, 2012
Men's Outdoor Performance List PHILADELPHIA – Redshirt freshman Tremanisha Taylor won the Penn Relays Championship of America division in the women’s discus, setting an NC State record with her throw of 175-feet, 1-inch. The mark tops her previous career best, set earlier this season at the Central Florida Invitational, by more than five feet and her second best, set at the Raleigh Relays, by nearly 10 feet. The previous school record of 174-feet, 8-inched was set by teammate Brittany Hampton at the NCAA Regional preliminaries in Greensboro in 2010. Her win came in the highest of three divisions (championship, college and Eastern) that are contested at the Penn Relays, the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious track and field meet. In her first season of team competition, the Henderson, N.C., native now has won the discus throw twice and the shot put three in outdoor events. She also won the shot put three times during the indoor season. On Thursday, Taylor won the college division of the shot put at the Penn Relays with a career-best mark of 53-feet, 11.25-inches, which is 1.5 inches shy of the school record set by Lawanda Henry in 2010. Last year, competing as an unattached participant in five meets, Taylor posted one win in the discus and two in the shot put and had three total runner-up finishes. The Wolfpack had other standout performances on Thursday, as junior Karimah Shepherd had a personal best and finished second in the women’s triple jump college division. Her mark of 41-feet, 4.25-inches exceeds her previous best mark by a full foot. Redshirt freshman Jule Rich was fifth in the men’s discus college division with a throw of 164-feet, 4-inches.
