Hill Victorious in Season Debut at Duke Twilight

DURHAM, N.C. – Making his first appearance of the 2013 outdoor season, redshirt senior Ryan Hill won the men’s 1,500-meter run to cap a successful Sunday for the NC State track & field team at the Duke Twilight meet.
Hill, a nine-time All-American, laced up his spikes for the first time since the indoor season, and recorded a 3:42.24 mark in the 1,500-meter race. The Hickory, N.C., native was just seconds off his 3:38.36 personal-best in the event.
In the women’s 800-meter race, junior Kenyetta Iyevbele took home top honors with a 2:07.09 clocking as an unattached runner. Freshman Megan Moye, who also competed unattached, placed fourth in the event in 2:10.05.
The Wolfpack placed three women’s throwers among the top four in the women’s discus, as redshirt sophomore Tremanisha Taylor collected her third victory this spring with a 164’ 6.00” (50.15m) heave. Redshirt freshman Nicole Chavis followed up with a second-place showing after her 157’ 1.00” (47.87m) throw, while classmate SeQuoia Watkins placed fourth with a 151’ 1.00” (46.06m) measurement.
In the men’s throws, redshirt junior Nathaniel Williams finished second in the men’s discus with a 179’ 11.00” (54.85m) mark, while redshirt senior Grant Pearce took fourth place (166’ 4.00” (50.71m) and redshirt sophomore Jule Rich claimed sixth at 160’ 6.00” (48.93m).
Redshirt junior Halsey Merritt won section two of the women’s 1,500-meter run in 4:40.81 and posted the sixth-best time in the event on the day.
Running attached, newcomer Adrian Ross placed second in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:05.95 in the event.
NC State will host the Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier next Friday, May 10 at the Paul Derr Track. The squad will also send athletes to the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., May 10-11, before sending another group to the Aggie Last Chance Qualifier in Greensboro, N.C., on Sunday, May 12.
