JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - NC State redshirt freshman Tremanisha Taylor qualified for NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in her second event on Friday and senior teammate Brittany Hampton earned a chance to join her, as both finished in the top 12 at the NCAA East Regional Preliminary on Friday afternoon at North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Taylor finished ninth and Hampton finished 10th in the women's discus throw and will advance to the championship meet, which will be held in two weeks at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Taylor had a throw of 168-feet, while Hampton threw the discus 165-feet, 7-inches to earn their place among the top dozen finishers at the regional meet.
Taylor, a native of Henderson, N.C., qualified for the women's shot put on Thursday with a school-record throw of 55-feet, ¼-inch. Sophomore Nathaniel Williams and junior distance runner Andie Cozzarelli also earned berths to the championship meet.
For Hampton, a native of Monroe, N.C., it will be her first trip to the NCAA championship meet.
Others who competed on Friday included senior Kwame Boatwright in the triple jump, sophomore Lacey Shuman in the high jump, junior Brian Himelright in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and junior Erin Mercer and sophomore Samantha Norman in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The three-day regional meet concludes on Saturday and could be a big day for All-American distance runner Ryan Hill, who is entered in both the men's 5,000 meters and the quarterfinals of the 1,500 meters.
Hill, a native of Hickory, N.C., has been to the NCAA championship meet in the 5,000 meters in each of his previous two years at NC State, earning first-team All-America honors as a redshirt freshman and honorable mention honors last year as a sophomore.
Cozzarelli will be looking for her second bid at the championship meet when she competes in the women's 5,000 meters with freshman teammate Joanna Thompson. Juniors Karimah Shepherd and Jazueline Daniels will compete in the women's triple jump, while ACC indoor champion Kris Kornegay-Gober looks to qualify for his first NCAA outdoor championship meet in the men's high jump.
