RALEIGH, N.C. – When the NC State indoor track and field team competes in its second event of the season this weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational, Wolfpack head coach Rollie Geiger will have a least one more sprinter at his disposal.

That’s because accomplished track star and football wide receiver T.J. Graham will join the team now that his gridiron duties are over.

The two-day Virginia Tech Invitational, featuring a total of 16 teams, begins Friday at 5 p.m. and continues through Saturday at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. NC State will send a full contingent of sprinters and field participants. Live stats will be available here.

The Wolfpack opened the season in early December, sending a number of sprinters and field participants in the Christopher Newport’s Holiday Open in Newport News, Va. Among the team’s leaders in that event were three-time ACC champion Lawanda Henry, who won the shot put and was second in the hammer throw, and All-ACC high jumper Kris Kornegay-Gober and sophomore Karimah Shepherd, who won the triple jump and was second in the high jump in the Pack’s first meet of the season.

The speedy Graham, a member of NC State’s Champs Sports Bowl champion football team, caught 23 passes in the 2010 regular season for 309 yards, returned 19 punts of 154 yards (including a 87-yard, go-ahead touchdown return against North Carolina) and returned 27 kickoffs for 512 yards. During the season, he also became the school’s career leader in kickoff return yardage.

Graham was an accomplished sprinter at Raleigh’s Wakefield High School, winning both the North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship in the 100 meters and 200 meters in 2008. He set the state record in the 100 meters with a time of 10.33 seconds.

He also finished third in the nation in the 200 meters at the Nike meet in 2007.

NC State has a long history of football players contributing to the track program. Wide receiver Danny Peebles, one of Graham’s mentors early in his track career, was a member of the 1985 NCAA Champion 4X100 relay team. He went on to have a prolific NFL career.
