Track & Field Heads to Hilton Garden Invitational
Jan. 31, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State track & field team will make the short trip west to Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete in the Hilton Garden Invitational Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2. Friday's events will begin at 12 p.m., and Saturday's competition will commence at 9:45 a.m.
This is the Pack's second trip to Winston-Salem this season, after the team competed in the JDL Fast Track Kick-Off to open the season on Dec. 1. It was there that senior Kris Kornegay-Gober set a personal best in the high jump, clearing 7' 4.25" to take first place in the event. Last week, at the Hokie Invitational, Kornegay-Gober matched his collegiate best, en route to a second-place finish in the event.
On the women's side of the jumps, senior Karimah Shepherd is undefeated in the triple jump through three meets this season. The Chesapeake, Va., native has improved her longest measurement in the event in consecutive weeks, with marks of 40' 5.5", 41' 3.25" and last week's 42' 4.25" record-setting leap. Shepherd's jump at last week's Hokie Invitational was the second longest in program history, as she inches closer to Sherlane Armstrong's 44' 00.50" school record set back in 1998.
Among other top performances thus far for NC State this season, freshman Ariah Graham is ranked second in the ACC in the women's 400m with her season-best clocking of 54.77, while junior Lacey Shuman also stands second in the conference, and 15th nationally, in the women's high jump with her top mark of 5' 10.75". Redshirt sophomore Tremanisha Taylor has led the way in the women's shot put, where she also ranks second in the league with her season-best 51-foot toss.
