Wolfpack distance runner Ryan Hill, a freshman in track elibility, has been named the Outdoor Performer of the Week by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hill set the second school record of his brief collegiate outdoor track career on Saturday at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational held at Stanford University. Hill clocked in at 13:44.36 in the 5000 meters to break the school record of 13:46.93 that was set by Bob Henes in 1991.
In April, Hill, a cross country All-American in 2009, broke the the school record in the 1500 meters, posting a 3:40.81 mark. The Hickory native, who was also the 2008 ACC Cross Country Rookie of the Year, broke Joe Wilkins 1500m mark of 3:42.70 that was set in 1972. Hill did not compete in track in 2009 as he was named a member of the US Junior World Cross Country team and was competing in the world championships in Amman, Jordan.
Hill’s time in the 5000 meters is currently the 13th-best in the collegiate ranks, while his 1500 meter mark ranks sixth.
