Track & Field Set to Host Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier
May 15, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State track & field team will host the Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier this Friday, May 16 at the Paul Derr Track. The meet will begin with the javelin competition at 3 p.m.
Student-athletes from 17 different schools, including ACC competitors Virginia and Duke, will head to Raleigh with their sights set on achieving final qualifying marks for the NCAA East Regional, which will be held May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla.
“For those who do not have a qualifying mark for Regionals, this is their last opportunity,” NC State head coach Rollie Geiger said. “For those that do have a mark, it’s the last competition before Regionals and the idea is to have something to keep them competitive since Regionals is two weeks away.”
After nearly two months of outdoor competition, the Wolfpack has nine student-athletes among the top 34 in the nation in 13 events. Moreover, State has set three school-records this year in the long jump (Alexis Perry), shot put (Tremanisha Taylor) and discus (SeQuoia Watkins).
“I think we’re progressing in a number of areas,” Geiger said. “We’ve had high level throwers in the past and for SeQuoia to set the school-record last week at the Virginia Challenge has a great deal of meaning.”
In terms of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the No. 23 ranked women’s team has nine athletes ranked in the top ten in 12 different events.
Perry is third in the ACC in the 100m hurdles (13.24) and first in the long jump (6.45m), while Taylor is first in the shot put (17.60m) and third in the discus (54.56m).
Joanna Thompson sits in fourth place in the 10,000m (33:24.6) and fifth place in the 5,000m (16:09.7). Watkins (54.94m) and Nicole Chavis (49.42m) rank second and sixth, respectively in the discus while Samantha Norman (10:21.2) and Erin Mercer (10:27.8) come in at fifth and eighth in the 3,000m steeplechase.
On the men’s side, Andrew Colley ranks first in the ACC in the 1,500m (3:41,61), second in the 5,000m (13:46.7) and third in the 10,000m (29:11.1). Graham Crawford sits right behind his teammate at third in the 5,000m (13:49.3) and fourth in the 1,500m (3:42.23).
