RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State's Brian Himelright was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men's Track & Field/Cross Country second team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors Association on Thursday.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter and maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00. The candidate must also have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Himelright graduated in May with with a 4.00 grade point average, earning his degree in technology, engineering, and design education. A redshirt senior, Himelright will return in the fall to work on achieving his master's degree, and complete his final year of eligibility.
During the 2011 cross country season, Himelright posted his highest finish at the ACC Championships, coming in 16th and missing All-ACC honors by just two spots.
Himelright earned his first All-ACC accolades during the outdoor campaign, placing second in the 3000m steeplechase at the ACC Championships. He qualified for the NCAA East Regional preliminary meet in that event for the second consecutive year, where he finished 23rd.
