MEDELLIN, Columbia -  Not only did he captain the Team USA Juniors, but NC State redshirt freshman Craig Engels went on to take the gold medal in the men's 1,500-meter race at the 17th Pan-American Junior Championships at Alfonso Galvis Duque Stadium Saturday evening.

Engels, who earned a silver medal at the USA Junior Championships in June, fought through the challenges of a middle-distance race at an elevation of 4,905 feet and clocked a time of 3:53.12 in being the first runner to cross the finish line. Engels edged out Brazil's Andre Thiago, who finished second in 3:54.22, and Mexico's Alan Garcia, who took third in 3:54.85.

The performance wraps up a perfect weekend for NC State's young track and field stars, after sophomore Alexis Perry earned a gold medal of her own in Friday's 100-meter hurdles.
