Wolfpack Opens Indoor Track And Field Season At JDL Kick-Off

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's and women's track and field teams open the indoor portion of their season schedule tomorrow at the JDL College Kick-Off Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Wolfpack will send 14 student-athletes to participate in the event.
Freshman Amara Bell, freshman Shirlee Evans and freshman Tyra Lea will participate in the triple jump, with Lea also taking part in the 60m Dash. Redshirt sophomore SeQuoia Watkins and redshirt sophomore Nicole Chavis will both compete in the weight throw and shot put, while redshirt freshman Alyssa Dunn will take part in the shot put.
Redshirt junior Jule Rich and redshirt senior Nathaniel Williams will compete in the weight throw and shot put to round out the men's side of the events. Senior Elizabeth Shuman and junior Caitlynn Filla will take part in the high jump, while freshman J'den Williams and freshman Paisley Simmons will each compete in the 60m Dash.
Looking back last year among those competing in Saturday's event, Nathaniel Williams earned second-team All-America honors for the second year in a row in the men's discus, while finishing fifth in the discus and sixth in the hammer throw at the ACC Championships. He recorded a season-best 59' 7.75" measurement in the weight throw to finish seventh at the ACC Championships, while winning the weight throw with a 59' 7.50" heave at last year's season-opening JDL Kick-Off.
Watkins qualified for the NCAA Championships and finished 21st in the discus throw. She recorded a new personal-best 172' 9.00" (52.65m) discus throw at the ACC Championships while finishing second to earn her first All-ACC honor. Shuman won the high jump at the Raleigh Relays while matching her personal-best mark of 5' 10.75". She earned All-ACC honors with a third-place showing at the ACC Championships, while winning the high jump at the Va. Tech Invitational, the Hilton Garden Invitational, and at the Virginia Tech Last Chance Qualifier.
Rich qualified for NCAA East preliminary's in the discus throw while placing seventh in the hammer and eighth in the discus throw at the ACC Championships. He finished eighth in the weight throw and 12th in the shot put at the ACC Championships. Addison, recorded a season-best 7' 0.25" mark in the high jump in his first-career meet at last year's JDL Kick-Off. He posted a team-best 24' 0.75" leap in the long jump at the Tyson Invitational at Arkansas and ran a season-best 6.86 in the 60m-dash heats at the Hokie Invitational.
Perry posted a season-best 8.42 time and took first place in the 60m hurdles at last season's JDL Kick-Off. She leapt a personal-best 19' 1.25" and claimed first place in the long jump at the Hilton Garden Invitational, while also recording a season-best 5' 5.00" mark in the high jump at the ACC Championships Additionally, Perry placed sixth in the women's pentathlon at the ACC Championships.
Chavis finished third at the ACC Championships, earning All-ACC honors, with a 62' 3.75" mark in the weight throw. For the year, she recorded three wins in the weight throw on the season, never placing outside of the top five in the weight throw in eight meets. She posted a season-best mark of 64' 8.50" in the weight throw at UNC's Kent Taylor Invite and notched a personal-best 42' 9.00" mark in the shot put at the Hokie Invitational.
Lea, Bell, Evans, Dunn and J'den Williams will all be making their Wolfpack debuts on Saturday.
