ST. LOUIS – Former NC State cross country All-American and current volunteer assistant for the Wolfpack men’s and women’s track teams Bobby Mack won the USA Cross Country open championship on Saturday at St. Louis’ Forest Park.

Mack, a former NC State graduate assistant coach, posted a time of 35:42 on the frigid afternoon to beat Aaron Braun of Flagstaff, Ariz., by 10 full seconds. Josh Simpson of Morgantown, W.Va., took third in 36:04.

Last summer, the Raleigh resident won the U.S. national 8,000-meter road race and represented the United States at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Scotland.

A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mack earned his degree in history education in 2008 and earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. He recently completed his master’s degree in education.
