RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State jumped all over Youngstown State with an eight-run second inning and never looked back, downing the Penguins 14-3 in the first game of a pair against Youngstown and Wright State Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park.

In the second, Ryan Mathews hit the Wolfpack’s (2-0) first homer of the year, a three-run shot to left to make it 7-0. Matt Bergquist's two-run double scored the opening runs of the ball game moments earlier.

Logan Jernigan (1-0) claimed the win in his first career appearance, throwing four no-hit innings before giving up three runs on three hits in the ninth. Jernigan finished with five strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Danny Healey started the game with 4.0 innings of two-hit ball, giving up no runs and striking out three.

Mathews finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Chris Diaz went 4-for-5 with a solo shot to lead off the fourth as one of his two RBIs. Freshman Brett Austin had three RBIs in his 2-for-4 performance.

NC State hosts Wright State at 3 p.m. Saturday, before closing the weekend with St. Joseph’s at 1 p.m. Sunday.
