RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 10 NC State trounced Villanova 14-3 behind 11 combined runs in the third and fourth innings, Thursday at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (2-1) wasted no time by pouncing on Villanova (0-2) in the first inning to the tune of three runs. The Wildcats cut that deficit to 3-1 in the second, but State ran away with six in the third and five in the fourth to make it 14-1. That score held through the eighth until Villanova added a pair of runs in the ninth to make it 14-3.

Tarran Senay unloaded a pair of doubles, one to each gap, in a 2-for-3 outing with two RBIs. Jake Fincher went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs, and a stolen base.

Trea Turner continued his hot start with a 2-for-3, one run, one RBI line. Turner has reached base eight times this year and scored on five of those trips. He’s 5-for-5 on scoring when reaching base with less than two outs.

Freshman Brad Stone (1-0) scored the win in his first career start after allowing one earned on two hits through the first five innings, striking out five. Freshmen Conor O’Brien, Gianni Zayas, and Will Gilbert worked the final four innings, holding Villanova to two earned on two hits. Gilbert started his career with a flourish, striking out the first two batters he faced.

Villanova’s Kevin MacLachlan started and took the loss after giving up nine runs, four earned, through 2 2/3 innings.

Turner led off the game with a walk, then took second and third on an errant pick off throw. Brett Austin singled through the right side to score him and push Sam Morgan to third. Morgan and Austin executed a double steal to score the second run. Fincher’s groundout allowed Austin to score from third.

State broke the game open in the third, kicked off by Morgan’s single up the middle. Senay doubled to left center to bring both Morgan and Austin to the plate. Fincher singled up the middle to score the next run. Williams doubled to right center to put both he and Fincher in scoring position. With two outs, Turner’s infield single coupled with a Villanova throwing error made it 9-1.

In the fourth, Senay hit a one-out double to right center. Fincher followed with a double to right to score Senay. With two away, Will Nance drove Fincher in with an RBI single to left center. Jake Armstrong doubled to right center to plate Nance. Matt Bergquist singled to right center to score Armstrong. A single by Turner kept the inning alive, setting up Morgan’s RBI single through the right side to extend the lead to 14-1.
