MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – NC State dropped a 3-2 decision to Coastal Carolina despite 10 strikeouts from Carlos Rodon in the Baseball at the Beach finale Sunday at BB&T Coastal Field.

Coastal (3-3) won the game in the bottom of the seventh when State’s (5-2) throwing error on a potentially inning-ending double play plated the tying and go-ahead runs.

Rodon made his second collegiate start and fanned 10 of the 18 batters he faced, striking out the side in the second, third, and fourth innings. Over four innings, the freshman allowed three hits, and walked in his only run in the fourth.

Ethan Ogburn (1-1) pitched four innings of relief, leaving him with the loss after giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

The Wolfpack could only muster six hits against an inspired performance from five different Chanticleer pitchers. Coastal’s Aaron Burke (1-0) claimed the win on 1 2/3 shut out innings during the seventh and eighth. Ryan Connolly (2) cashed in the save opportunity, allowing only John Gianis’s single in the ninth.

Tarran Senay led the Pack with a 2-for-4 day that included a double in the second. Brett Austin added State’s only other extra-base hit of the afternoon,  a one-out double in the eighth, to go 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Trea Turner’s steal in the third makes him 11-for-11 on stolen base attempts this season.

Andrew Ciencin and Danny Canela accounted for the Wolfpack’s two RBIs. Ciencin’s sac fly scored the first, and Canela’s two-out single provided the second in the third inning.

With one out in the third, Turner reached and advanced to second when a throw from third sailed over the first baseman’s head.  Austin followed with a walk, and the pair of runners executed a double steal to move to second and third. Ciencin sent a fly to shallow right, deep enough for Turner to beat the tag at home, and Austin advanced on the throw. Canela singled with two-out to make it 2-0 State in the early going.

Rodon didn’t allow a runner past second through the first three innings, tallying seven of his 10 strikeouts. In the fourth, Coastal ‘s Rich Witten led off with a single to left. A hit batsman and Daniel Bowman’s infield single loaded the bases with no outs. Rodon struck out the next two batters, but walked the third to make it 2-1, before a third strikeout finished the inning.

In the seventh, Coastal led off with a single through the left side and a walk, setting up a sac bunt to get two runners in scoring position. A walk loaded the bases before Coastal became the beneficiary of the play of the game. Witten hit a routine grounder to short, which Diaz flipped to second for the first out. In the rush to complete the double play to prevent a tie ball game, Matt Bergquist’s throw to first bounced right of Ciencin at first, allowing the game-winning run to score from second.

NC State returns to the diamond Tuesday to host Campbell at Doak Field at Dail Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Radio coverage will be provided by 88.1 WKNC, fans can follow live updates by @NCStateBaseball, and live stats will be available on GoPack.com.
