DURHAM, N.C. — Chris Marconcini hit a pair of triples and drove in two runs, and Duke overcame an early NC State lead to defeat the Wolfpack 8-3 in the middle game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Following NC State’s 4-3 victory in the opening game of the series on Friday, the Wolfpack and Blue Devils are tied at a game apiece heading into the final game of the series on Sunday.
NC State (8-6 overall and 1-1 in the ACC) jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. John Gianis and Andrew Ciencin led off the game with doubles, and Danny Canela drove in a run with a groundout. Blue Devils starter Dennis O’Grady (4-0) settled in after that, however, and held the Pack to just one more run while pitching into the sixth inning. Drew Van Orden worked the final four innings and retired 12 of the 13 men he faced to earn his second save.
While O’Grady and Van Orden were combining to scatter seven hits, NC State’s Danny Healey proved human for the first time in 2011. Healey (1-1), who had allowed just four runs on seven hits in 18 1/3 innings over his previous three outings, worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
Duke (12-4 and 1-1) tied the game at 2-2 in the third on Marconcini’s first triple, a single by Jordan Betts and a double by Jeff Kremer. An RBI double by Marcus Stroman and a run-scoring single by David Perkins drove in two more in the fourth to give the Blue Devils the lead at 4-2.
NC State got one run back in the fifth. Ciencin led off with an infield single, and Pratt Maynard walked. O’Grady pounced on Canela’s sacrifice attempt and nailed Ciencin at third for the first out, but back-to-back walks to pinch-hitter Dylan Brown and Harold Riggins brought home the Wolfpack’s third run.
Duke answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Kremer led off with a homer to right field and Angelo LaBruna doubled in a run to make it 6-3. Duke added its final two runs in the eighth on Marconcini’s second triple of the game, scoring Stroman and Perkins.
