RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 16 NC State took a lead into the eighth inning, but blew a save for the first time this season, as a late homer propelled UNC Greensboro to an 8-5, 11-inning victory on Tuesday at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (16-6) bullpen came into the game with a perfect 11-0 record, six saves in six attempts, and a combined 2.32 ERA. Those stats fell by the wayside in a wild midweek contest when UNCG (9-10) roared back from a 4-2 deficit in the top eighth. T.J. Spina hit a two-run bomb to put the Spartans on top 5-4. State rallied to tie in the bottom half, but neither team could finish the deal in regulation. The deadlock held firm until the 11th, when UNCG scored three to capture the win.

Jake Fincher led the Pack with a 3-for-6 outing including two RBIs. Brett Austin had his 10-game hitting streak snapped in the loss. Logan Ratledge provided a double, two runs, and an RBI on the night. Austin, Bryan Adametz, and Tarran Senay each scored once.

Wolfpack reliever Ryan Wilkins (2-1) took his first loss since April 17, 2012 after giving up the critical home run and leaving with the winning run on base. Andrew Woeck had a strong showing as the first reliever of the game, holding UNCG to two hits and no runs for 3 1/3 with three strikeouts.

A total of 16 different pitchers were used in the ballgame. UNCG reliever Blair Betts (1-0) eventually came up with the win. Dylan Hathcock claimed his first save of the year with a perfect 11th frame.

State fell into an early 1-0 deficit on three walks and a single in the top of the first, but came back with three in the third started by Adametz's lead-off triple. Ratledge grounded to the right side to score him. With the bases clear, Austin walked and Senay singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. Fincher legged out a bunt single for an RBI. A wild pitch pushed both runners into scoring position, and Carlos Rodon's pinch-hit groundball plated the third run.

The Pack held a 4-2 advantage heading into the eighth when Trevor Edwards led off with a single to right center. A passed ball and a groundout moved him to third with two outs. Cambric Moye singled to left field to chop the lead to 4-3. Spina homered to left next to make it 5-4. State came back by pushing Ratledge home after a lead-off double. Fincher reached on a fielder's choice that included an errant throw from second to first to score the tying run.

After battling for two scoreless innings, UNCG won the game with three in the 11th. Back-to-back walks started the inning before Travis Orwig induced a popped up bunt for the first out. The game hinged on a close call during the next at-bat. Facing a full count, Benigno Marrero watched an outside pitch while both runners took off. Austin gloved the pitch and fired to third in time to nab the lead runner on a potentially inning-ending double play. Instead, the pitch was ruled outside, allowing Marrero to walk to load the bases. A wild pitch to the next batter scored the go-ahead run. One pitch later, a throwing error on a grounder to short allowed two more to score.
