COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 10 NC State baseball suffered a 10-0 loss in its series-opener at Maryland on Friday night at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

The Wolfpack (14-6, 3-4 ACC) dips below .500 in conference for the first time since the conclusion of its series with Maryland in 2013. In last year’s run to the College World Series, NC State clawed its way back to 5-7 in conference by taking two of three from the Terrapins. The third game of that series started a 15-game winning streak that featured three conference sweeps in a row, as State roared to a 19-10 ACC record.

Maryland (14-6, 3-4) senior righthander Jake Stinnett (3-3) carved up the Pack lineup, dealing eight shutout innings while striking out 14, holding State to four hits and one walk. Brandon Casas pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the shutout.

Carlos Rodon (2-4) worked 4 2/3 without allowing an earned run, fanning eight to up his strikeout total to 50 for the year. Four Wolfpack errors in the first five innings allowed eight unearned runs.

Rodon ceded the ACC strikeout lead on the evening, falling one behind Stinnett as he racked up his 51st. Joe O’Donnell relieved Rodon in the fifth. Chris Williams went the rest of the way, allowing two earned on four hits with two punchouts in three innings.

Brett Austin, Andrew Knizner, John Mangum, and Jake Armstrong provided one hit each for the Wolfpack’s only offensive punch.

NC State returns to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans can follow along with live stats on, Twitter updates from @NCStateBaseball, or radio coverage on 88.1 WKNC.
