GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Andrew Ciencin homered and drove in four runs and Ethan Ogburn allowed three hits in six shutout innings Tuesday to lead NC State past UNC Greensboro 9-1 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Wolfpack, which won for the fifth time in the last six games, improved to 15-11 with the victory, while the Spartans dropped to 14-9.
NC State put the game away early. Ciencin belted a two-out three-run homer to left in the top of the first inning off UNCG starter and loser Jonathan Jones (0-1), and the Wolfpack added single runs in the third and fourth. Ciencin drove in Pratt Maynard with an RBI groundout in the third, and Matt Bergquist singled in Brett Williams in the fourth.
The Wolfpack made it a blowout with a four-run fifth inning. Tarran Senay singled home Ciencin, who got the inning started with a one-out bunt single. A second run scored on a wild pitch, and John Gianis put an exclamation point on things with a two-run single to right-center, making it 9-0.
Nine runs was more than plenty for Ogburn, who issued a two-out walk in both the first and second innings, then retired eight in a row before Ray Crawford broke up the no-hitter with an infield single in the bottom of the fifth. Ogburn then walked Cambric Moye to put a UNCG runner in scoring position for the first time, but Drew Gehringer flied out to center and Bobby Martin struck out to end the inning.
Ogburn (2-2) wound up allowing three hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked three. Josh Easley, Nick Rice and Rey Cotilla mopped up with an inning apiece. The Spartans nicked Cotilla for an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break up the shutout.
