BUIES CREEK, N.C. - NC State baseball battled its way through 12 innings to top Campbell 9-2 on Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Wolfpack (16-11) built a 2-0 lead through four innings, before Campbell (19-10) rallied to knot the score 2-2 in the seventh. After four scoreless innings, the Pack broke the game wide open with a touchdown in the top 12th.

Eric Peterson (2-2) claimed a well-earned victory on five innings of shutout ball beginning in the eighth. Peterson’s identical twin brother, Patrick, started the game and blanked the Camels for the first 5 1/3. The twins combined to work 10 1/3, shutting out Campbell while scattering 10 hits and striking out four.

Jake Fincher paced the Pack with a 2-for-5 night including an RBI triple and two runs scored. Carlos Rodon went 2-for-5 from the designated hitter spot. Brett Austin turned in a 2-for-5 performance of his own with a run, two days after having his 14-game hitting streak snapped against Miami. Trea Turner went 1-for-5 with a three-RBI triple and a stolen base to reach 96 for his career, 31 shy of the ACC career record.

State didn’t produce a baserunner until the third, when starting first baseman Preston Palmeiro reached with a one-out walk. Fincher pushed him across on a triple to the right center gap. Logan Ratledge tacked on another with a leadoff homer to left to start the fourth, putting the Pack on top 2-0.

Meanwhile, Patrick Peterson retired the eight batters in a row starting with a bases loaded jam in the second, until a leadoff single started the Campbell fifth. Peterson left in the sixth, going 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and no walks while scattering six hits and holding the Camels scoreless.

Campbell evened the score 2-2 in the bottom seventh. A hit batter started the inning, and a wild pitch one out later moved him to second. An infield single on a tapper left of the mound put runners on the corners with one out. Danny Pardo knocked an RBI single to right center to plate the first run. A sac bunt down the first base line scored the next, before Thomas induced a fly to left to end the rally.

Turner drew a leadoff walk to start the Wolfpack 12th and stole second. Ratledge reached on a fielding error at short to put runners on the corners, then Austin was intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out. Turner scored standing up on a wild pitch to the next batter. Bubby Riley walked to reload the bases. Another wild pitch brought Ratledge home to stretch the lead to 4-2.

After a Campbell pitching change, Andrew Knizner singled to center to make it 5-2. Brian Taylor walked behind him to reload the bases. A Fincher walked pushed another across. Then Turner cleared the bases with a stand-up, three-RBI triple to set the final at 9-2.

NC State returns to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to host East Carolina. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m.
