North Carolina Defeats NC State Baseball 10-2 In First Game Of Series
April 19, 2002
RALEIGH, N.C. - Adam Greenberg hit two doubles and a homer, and drove in five runs to lead North Carolina to a 10-2 victory over NC State in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball action at UNC's Boshamer Stadium.
With the win, the 12th-ranked Tar Heels improved to 26-14 overall and 11-5 in the ACC. The Wolfpack fell ot 25-15 overall and 4-9 in the conference. North Carolina starter Scott Autrey (2-2) got the win after allowing two runs, one of them earned, on four hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out four. He allowed just four Wolfpack baserunners to reach scoring position, and one of those was on a passed ball. Daniel Caldwell (6-5) got the loss for NC State after being roughed up for eight runs on 10 hits in three innings of work, his shortest outing of the season. Caldwell walked none and struck out two. Four of the eight runs were unearned.
The Tar Heels drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning on a hail of two-out extra-base hits. Chris Ianetta reached on a one-out infield single, and after Chad Prosser flied to center field with the second out of the inning, Ron Braun doubled off the wall in right to drive in Ianetta with the game's first run. Greg Magnum, the ninth hitter in the lineup, hit a double between center fielder Joe Gaetti and right fielder Matt Butler to drive in Braun, and Greenberg followed with a two-run homer to right to give North Carolina a 4-0 lead.
The Tar Heels were at it again with another two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Caldwell retired Chris Maples on a fly ball to center field and struck out Jeremy Cleveland for the first two outs in the inning, but Ianetta reached on an error that seemed to open the floodgates. Prosser rolled a hit-and-run single through the right side of the infield to put runners on first and third. Braun blooped an RBI single into shallow center field to drive in Ianetta, and Magnum hit an opposite-field liner to left for a double that scored Prosser. That made it 6-0, and Greenberg tacked on two more with a grounder that kicked up chalk just behind the first-base bag and rolled into the right-field corner for a two-run double that gave the Tar Heels an 8-0 lead.
Jeremy Dutton led off the top of the fourth for the Pack and walked. Autrey's wild pitch allowed Dutton to advance to second, and Joe Gaetti's infield single put runners on the corners with none out. Dutton came in to score on a passed ball by Ianetta, putting NC State on the board at 8-1. Sammy Esposito's third home run of the season, a one-out solo shot in the top of the fifth, cut the UNC lead to 8-2.
Wolfpack reliever Nate Cretarolo tossed three scoreless innings after relieving Caldwell to start the fourth, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Braun led off with a walk and was erased at second when Magnum's bunt attempt was turned into a force play by catcher Colt Morton. Magnum went all the way to third when Cretarolo's pickoff throw was wild and rolled into the UNC bullpen. Greenberg doubled down the right-field line, his second of the game, to drive in Magnum, went to third when Cretarolo balked, and scored on Russ Adams' single to right field.
The series will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m. Derek McKee (3-3, 5.17) will pitch for the Wolfpack against UNC's Garry Bakker (4-2, 3.18).
