RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 18 NC State rolled 9-0 to even its series with Boston College Saturday in game one of a doubleheader at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Pack (25-12, 12-8 ACC) controlled the game throughout behind Carlos Rodon’s 10-strikeout performance. Rodon (7-0) threw eight shutout innings, allowing five hits and one walk. Dillon Frye pitched the final inning, holding the Eagles (15-24, 6-14 ACC) hitless and striking out one.
Andrew Ciencin led the Pack with two doubles in a 3-for-5, one RBI effort. Chris Diaz drove in three runs and scored once in a 2-for-4 performance with a double. Ryan Mathews homered for the second time in the series, his seventh of the year, in a 2-for-5 day with two RBIs and two runs scored. Trea Turner went 2-for-4 and stole his 41st base of the year.
Boston College used five pitchers in the game with starter Hunter Gordon (1-5) taking the loss on four runs, one earned, on seven hits over the first five innings.
State cruised to a 4-0 lead in the bottom fifth, highlighted by Diaz’s two-RBI double. Matt Bergquist started the rally with one out by reaching when a throw from short pulled the first baseman off the bag. Turner followed with a single through the left side on an 0-2 count to put two on. Diaz doubled to the left center gap, sending the first two runs of the game home. A grounder to the right side moved Diaz to third, setting up Mathews’s two-out RBI single to left. Ciencin cashed in the final run of the inning by crushing a double off the wall in left above the reach of the leaping left fielder.
The Pack tacked on a pair after a 40-minute rain delay in the sixth to make it 6-0. Austin led off the inning with a walk, Jake Fincher singled to right, and Bergquist walked to load the bases with nobody out. Turner took a pitch off his helmet to plate one, and Diaz hit a sac fly to center for the other. Matt Alvarez left the game for Matt Brazis, who struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
The Wolfpack mustered another two runs in the seventh on a two-out rally. Brett Austin drew a walk, then stole second. Fincher smoked a full-count fastball down the left field line for an RBI double. Bergquist followed with an RBI single just left of the shortstop’s glove to extend the lead to 8-0.
Mathews hit a solo shot with one away in the eighth to put State on top 9-0. The homer to the left center gap represented his seventh of the year and second of the series.
