RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 6 NC State evened its series against No. 1 North Carolina with a 7-3 win in front of a record crowd on Saturday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (34-11, 15-8 ACC) drew 3,123 spectators to watch the victory, the largest crowd in Doak Field history. State ran out to a 7-0 lead by the end of the fifth, thanks to one run in the third and three in the fourth and fifth. North Carolina (41-4, 19-3) answered with a three-run homer in the seventh, but could not cut the lead any further.

For the third year in a row, the Pack boasts a win over the top-ranked team in the nation. State defeated No. 1 Florida State in 2012 and No. 1 Virginia in 2011. Wolfpack pitchers struck out Tar Heel batters a combined 11 times, the most strikeouts in a single game against UNC this season.

Carlos Rodon (5-2) accounted for 10 of those strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work. Rodon scattered seven hits and left with two runners on base, both scored to put two earned on his final line. In three career appearances against North Carolina, Rodon has allowed three earned in 22 1/3 innings, good for a 1.19 ERA, striking out 29 while walking eight.

Travis Orwig claimed his first career save over a tense 1 2/3 innings with a 7-3 lead. Orwig held the Tar Heels to one hit while striking out one. Grant Sasser was the middle reliever in the game, allowing one earned in 2/3 of an inning.

Jake Armstrong provided a pair of RBIs and drew two walks on the evening. Trea Turner went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI, a walk and two stolen bases. Jake Fincher went 1-for-4 with a run to reach base for the 43rd game of 45 this season.

Tarran Senay and Bryan Adametz each had a pair of hits. Senay's outing included a double and Adametz scored a run. Grant Clyde stole a base and hit his ninth double in the month of April while scoring twice and driving in one. Clyde has 13 doubles on the year. Matt Bergquist contributed an RBI in a 1-for-4 day. All nine Wolfpack starters had hits in the ballgame.

North Carolina starter Benton Moss (7-1) took the loss on five earned over the first 4 1/3 innings. Reliever Trevor Kelley worked the final 3 2/3, allowing one earned.

NC State started the scoring in the bottom of the third, behind Turner's leadoff single to left. Turner stole second and scored on Brett Austin's RBI single to center.

The Pack scored three more in the fourth after Clyde was hit by a pitch as the leadoff. Armstrong walked with one away to put runners on first and second, then Adametz singled to third to load the bases. Bergquist sent a chopper to the hole at short to score the first run of the inning. A passed ball scored Armstrong. Turner's tapper in front of the plate scored Adametz to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Fincher singled to center with one out to start the Pack's three-run fifth. Clyde doubled to right center to score him, then stole third in a double steal after Brett Williams drew a walk. Armstrong knocked both runners in on a single to center field to make it 7-0.

UNC made it interesting in the seventh on Cody Stubbs' three-run homer. Landon Lassiter hit a one-out single to right to start the rally. With two away, Brian Holberton walked to chase Rodon from the game. Stubbs homered to right as the next batter to trim the lead to 7-3. Sasser and Orwig did the rest, holding UNC scoreless for the final 2 1/3 to seal the victory.

NC State returns to action on Sunday for the rubber match with North Carolina at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. Radio coverage will be provided by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can also follow along with live stats from GoPack.com, or on Twitter via @NCStateBaseball.
