RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State baseball fell into a 4-0 deficit in the top of the first, then battled back to trail 5-4, before Richmond ran away with a 7-4 victory on Wednesday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (27-20) had its five-game winning streak snapped thanks to the Spiders (21-24-1) building a 4-0 lead in the top first. State cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom half, before Richmond opened up a 5-1 lead in the fourth. The Pack scored twice in the fourth and once more in the sixth to make it 5-4. Richmond scored once in the eighth and ninth to set the final at 7-4.

Chance Shepard led the Wolfpack offense with a 2-for-4 game including two runs, a walk, and his third double of the season. Jake Fincher turned in State’s only other multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4. Preston Palmeiro provided a two-RBI, two-out single in his 1-for-2 outing. Bubby Riley contributed one RBI, and John Mangum scored once.

Trea Turner extended his reached base streak to 18 games in a 1-for-4 effort with a run, a walk, and his 22nd stolen base of the year. Andrew Knizner drove Turner in for his lone RBI of the day. In each of the Pack’s last five games, Turner has scored at least once and Knizner has driven in at least one run. Over that stretch, Knizner has 11 RBIs and Turner has 12 runs.

Wolfpack starter Cory Wilder (0-1) claimed the loss in a short outing. D.J. Thomas worked the next 2 2/3, holding Richmond to one unearned run. Joe O’Donnell looked sharp in over three innings, fanning three and holding the Spiders to one hit and one walk. O’Donnell retired six of his last seven before leaving. Cody Beckman, Eric Peterson, Ryan Williamson, and Jon Olczak combined to work the final 2 2/3.

Facing a 4-0 deficit, Turner manufactured a run in the bottom first by singling up the middle, advancing to second on a wild pitch, stealing third, and scoring on a groundout. With the Pack down 5-1 in the fourth, Mangum walked and advanced to third on Shepard’s double to left field. With two away, Palmeiro singled to left to score them both. State scored once more in the sixth when Bubby Riley pinch hit and drew a bases loaded walk to score Shepard.
