RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State baseball clawed back from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to force extras before falling 8-5 to Wake Forest in a wild 10th inning on Monday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (29-21, 11-16 ACC) scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Patrick Peterson worked perfectly through the first three innings and took a no-hitter into the fifth. Wake Forest (27-24, 13-14) scored twice in the sixth to make it 2-1. State rallied to tie the game 2-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on Jake Fincher’s RBI single. Wake scored six in the top of the 10th to take an 8-2 lead. The Pack trimmed that lead in half on Trea Turner’s three-run homer to set the final at 8-5.

Patrick Peterson retired the first 10 batters of the game on his way to a season-long six innings of work, holding Wake to two earned on three hits and a walk while striking out four. Eric Peterson (4-3) took the loss after shutting out the Deacons for the next three innings, then allowing four earned in extras on three hits. Cody Beckman and Jon Olczak combined to pitch the final 2/3.

Turner went 2-for-5 with a homer, a double, three RBIs, and two runs. In possibly his final plate appearance at Doak Field at Dail Park, Turner cranked his eighth home run of the year to cut Wake’s lead in half. Andrew Knizner went 2-for-5 with an RBI, driving in Turner for the 11th time in the last eight contests. Fincher went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and the game-tying RBI in the ninth in what could be his final at-bat at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Jake Armstrong went 1-for-3 with a run and a walk. Logan Ratledge reached base three times on a trio of walks with one run scored and a stolen base.

NC State struck first during a first inning rally started by Turner’s leadoff double down the left field line. Turner advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on Knizner’s RBI single through the left side with one away. Wake scored twice in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead.

In the ninth, Ratledge led off with a walk and stole second. Brett Austin was intentionally walked with one out, and both runners stayed put after a pop fly to third for the second out. Fincher lined the first pitch he saw into center to score Ratledge and tie the game 2-2.

The Deacons poured on six runs in the top of the 10th to take an 8-2 lead, but the Pack wasn’t finished fighting. Armstrong singled to short as the lead off, and Nathan Hood drew a pinch-hit walk behind him. Turner pasted a full count pitch down the left field line for his three-run jack to chop the lead in half, but the Wolfpack couldn’t muster the finishing kick to come back again.
