RALEIGH, N.C. -- Pratt Maynard hit a two-run homer Tuesday and Chris Diaz had three hits to back the shutout pitching of Danny Healey and Chris Overman as NC State defeated William & Mary 4-0 in the final game of the home season at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The victory was NC State's 30th of the 2011 campaign. The Wolfpack now is 30-23 with three regular-season games remaining. William & Mary dropped to 24-28 with the loss.
Maynard drove in all the runs the Pack needed with a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the first, and Healey (2-4) made the two runs stand up into the seventh inning. After getting three hits in the top of the first inning, William & Mary didn't advance another baserunner into scoring position until the seventh, when it loaded the bases with one away, chasing Healey from the game.
Healey, who allowed six hits, walked two and struck out two, gave the ball to Overman, who struck out Jackson Shaver and retired leadoff hitter Ryan Brown on a groundout to end the threat in the seventh. Overman worked the final 2 2/3 innings for his sixth save.
After Overman pitched out of the jam in the top of the seventh, NC State added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Diaz, his third hit of the night, and a bases-loaded walk to Tarran Senay.
All four Wolfpack runs came at the expense of Tribe starter Cole Shain (1-5), who worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed six hits.
