GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State baseball fell 4-3 on Tuesday at NewBridge Bank Park, in a contest that hinged on Trea Turner’s attempted steal of home.

The Wolfpack (32-23) opened up a 1-0 lead in the first on Turner’s leadoff triple and Brett Austin’s RBI single. North Carolina (33-23) tied the game in the second on Skye Bolt’s solo homer to right. The Tar Heels added three more in the third to make it 4-1. The Pack responded with two in the fourth, but couldn’t push the tying run across, setting the final at 4-3.

In the fifth inning, Turner led off with a single to right center and stole second. Logan Ratledge walked behind him, and the pair executed a double steal to move into scoring position. Austin walked to fill the vacancy at first, loading the bases with nobody out. A foul pop behind the plate left them loaded with one away.

The next at-bat ended with a called strike three on a 1-2 count. Turner inched down the third base line, then broke for home on the throw back to the mound. The relay back from the mound reached the plate as Turner was diving in, and an out call by the home plate umpire ended the inning. The steal would have been Turner’s second career steal of home. The junior pulled the feat on a pickoff throw to first against Coastal Carolina on May 3, 2014.

State advanced four more runners into scoring position over the next four innings, but couldn’t push the tying run across.

Turner reached base for the 26th-consecutive game and finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with a triple, a run, a walk, and two stolen bases to pull within one of tying for third all-time on the ACC’s career leaderboard. Austin went 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI, and a walk, reaching in his first four plate appearances. Bubby Riley went 1-for-3 with a 2-RBI single in the fourth. Andrew Knizner provided the Pack’s only other hit in a 1-for-5 game with a run.

Wolfpack starter Eric Peterson (4-4) ended up saddled with the loss on 2 2/3 innings of work. Relievers Cody Beckman, Brad Stone, Jon Olczak, Will Gilbert, and Cory Wilder combined to work the last 6 1/3, with none going longer than 1 2/3. The quintet inherited a combined five runners, and allowed none to cross home plate.

NC State awaits the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, May 26, with the hopes of securing an at-large bid to the field of 64.
