NC State baseball opens the 2014 season at No. 5 according to Baseball America's preseason top 25 rankings, released Monday. The standing represents the highest preseason ranking in Wolfpack baseball history.

"Preseason rankings have a lot to do with the respect that a program has garnered over the past several years," said NC State head coach Elliott Avent. "It's good that our program is attracting this kind of respect nationally. Consistency is the trademark every program hopes to achieve. Much work must be done before we can once again contend for a national championship, and our players are looking forward to this challenge."

For the second year in a row, NC State sets a new program record for highest preseason ranking. In 2013, State opened the year at No. 8 in Baseball America's poll and finished the year ranked No. 6.

Atlantic Coast Conference teams occupy three of the top six slots according to Baseball America. Virginia tops the poll, while Florida State checks in one spot behind NC State at No. 6.

NC State earned a No. 10 preseason ranking from the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in December.

The Wolfpack opens the 2014 season on Feb. 14 with the first of a three-game series at UC Santa Barbara. Appalachian State visits Doak Field for the Pack's home opener on Feb. 21.
