Baseball Completes Abbreviated Gardner-Webb Sweep, 10-3
RALEIGH, N.C. – Ryan Pond homered, doubled and drove in four runs, and three NC State pitchers combined on a six-hitter Sunday as the Wolfpack defeated Gardner-Webb 10-3. With the win, the Wolfpack completed a sweep of the Bulldogs in a series shortened to two games because of cold weather at Doak Field at Dail Park.
NC State improved to 5-0 with the victory, while the loss dropped Gardner-Webb to 1-5. Eric Surkamp started and got the win for the Wolfpack in a prearranged three-way split with Jeff Stallings and Eryk McConnell. Surkamp allowed three runs on four hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out a career-high nine, including the first eight outs he recorded. Gardner-Webb starter Jonathan Ban (1-2) took the loss with two difficult innings. He allowed seven runs on six hits, walked two, unloaded a wild pitch, and did not record a strikeout.
In addition to Pond, Mike Roskopf had three singles and drove in three runs for the Wolfpack. Pat Ferguson hit a pair of doubles.
NC State got off to a fast start by scoring four times in bottom of the first inning. Joe Florio led off with a walk and stole second. Vince Gutierrez followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Roskopf’s one-out, hit-and-run single to left field drove in Florio with the game’s first run . Jeremy Synan made it 2-0 by beating out the relay from second on a potential double-play grounder, scoring Gutierrez on the play. Pond followed by lofting a fly ball over the wall in left for a two-run home run.
Ferguson led off the bottom of the second with a double off the wall in right-center and scored on David Lindsay’s RBI-single to left. Florio bunted Lindsay to second base, and Gutierrez drove him home with a double into the right-field corner. Gutierrez went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Roskopf’s opposite-field single to left, giving the Wolfpack a 7-0 lead.
Joey Testa laced a one-out double down the left-field line in the top of the third inning for the Bulldogs, breaking up Surkamp’s string of six consecutive strikeouts. Jamaal Kinard broke up the shutout with a two-out single to center field, driving in Testa. Jay McConnell followed with a high chopper down the third-base line that Florio was unable to glove. Kinard raced all the way home from second base when the ball caromed off Florio’s glove and into foul territory, slicing the lead to 7-2.
Shea Harris got a one-out fly ball up into the wind and over the wall in left in the top of the fourth, pulling the Bulldogs one run closer at 7-3. Vince Gutierrez got that run back in the bottom half of the inning, leading off with a walk, moving all the way to third when Ramon Corona grounded out on a hit-and-run play, and scoring on Roskopf’s single through the drawn-in infield. Synan walked to put runners on first and second, and Pond belted a two-run double down the left-field line, making it 10-3.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday, February 21, with a home game against North Carolina A&T. Game time is 3 p.m.
