Baseball Finishes Sweep Of Quinnipiac, 17-7
RALEIGH, N.C. – Dallas and Drew Poulk led a 17-hit attack with three hits apiece to lead NC State to a 17-7 victory over Quinnipiac and complete a three-game sweep of the Bobcats at Doak Field.

NC State improved to 10-1 with the victory while the Bobcats dropped to 0-3. Reliever Grant Sasser (2-0) was awarded the win after pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Quinnipiac starter Brian Monack (0-1) lasted four innings and was charged with eight runs, all earned.

Dallas Poulk, who moved to the two spot in the lineup earlier this week, went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, scored five runs and drove in three. In four games batting in the two hole, he is 8-for-15 with two doubles, a home run, four walks, 11 runs scored and eight RBIs. In those four games, the high-flying NC State offense has scored 58 runs, an average of 14.5 runs per game. For the season, the Wolfpack has scored 148 runs in 11 games, an average of 13.5 per game.
Poulk, now hitting .486 for the season. Got the Wolfpack started in the bottom of the first, hitting a one-out single to center, taking second on a walk to Andrew Ciencin and scoring on Drew Poulk’s single to left. A wild pitch advanced Poulk and Ciencin to second and third, respectively, and Danny Canela scored Ciencin with an RBI groundout.

Russell Wilson led off the bottom of the second with a triple into the right-field corner, and scored on Harold Riggins’ sacrifice fly to right. Kyle Wilson reached on an infield single and came all the way around to score on Dallas Poulk’s double to the wall in center field.

Chris Schaeffer, also having a red-hit week at the plate, drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the third and Russell Wilson was hit by a pitch. Riggins singled to center field to drive in one run and took second on the throw to the plate. Matt Bergquist followed with an infield single and took second when the throw from third base pulled the first baseman off the bag. He collided with Bergquist and the ball went sailing into foul ground, allowing Wilson to score and Bergquist to take second and make it 7-0.

Quinnipiac scored four times in the top of the fourth. Chris Migani drew a one-out walk and Jeff Carino singled up the middle. Michael Amanti singled to center field to drive in the first run, and Carino went to third on a wild pitch to put runners on first and third with one away. Ryan Ullrich walked to load the bases with two outs, and Ben Farina singled to center field to drive in a pair. Ullrich scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Canela hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to get one run back and push the lead to 8-4, and the Pack made it a seven-run game again with three in the bottom of the sixth. Dallas Poulk led off and walked. Ciencin was hit by a pitch, and he and Poulk pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third. Drew Poulk drove them both in with a double down the left-field line, and Schaeffer drove in Drew Poulk with a single to left. That made it 11-4.

Dallas Poulk reached on a one-out error by first baseman Gabe Guerino, then went to second when Migani, the second baseman, retrieved the ball but threw it away in a vain attempt to retire Poulk at first. Ciencin doubled to drive in Poulk for a 12-4 Wolfpack lead.

Russell Wilson led off the bottom of the ninth and hit a drive off the wall in right field. Right fielder Mike Bartlett ran headlong into the wall trying to catch ball, which caromed away and allowed Wilson to scamper around the bases with an inside-the-park home run. Riggins followed with a double to left. Bergquist reached on a single to shortstop Michael Amanti, and pinch-runner Bill Edwards alertly moved to third when the throw to first was late and in the dirt for an error. Tarran Senay pinch-hit and walked to load the bases, and Dallas Poulk drove in a pair with a double to left. Chris Diaz grounded to second to drive in another run, and Drew Poulk doubled past the left fielder to score Dallas Poulk and give NC State a 17-4 lead heading to the ninth.

The Bobcats rallied for three final runs in the top of the ninth. Brian Monack led off with a double and Joe Poletsky walked. Pinch-hitter Tom Donovan walked to load the bases with none out. Carino drove in one run with an infield groundout, and Amanti singled up the middle to drive in the other two.

NC State will return to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. game vs. North Carolina A&T at Doak Field at Dail Park. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on-line at through the Pack Pass package.
