RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State cracked the national rankings for the first time this season after a 3-1 week that included taking two of three from 10th-ranked Georgia Tech in the first weekend of Atlantic Coast Conference play, improving to 11-3 (2-1 ACC).
The standing marks the highest for State since 2008, which saw the Wolfpack ranked as high as 15th in both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, and 20th in the coaches' poll. Here's what the pollsters had to say about the Pack's ascension:
"The Wolfpack opened ACC play with a big series win against Georgia Tech. Anthony Tzamtzis (1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB) had a short outing Friday, and Ryan Wilkins (4 IP, 11 H, 10 R, 9 ER) was pounded in relief. Chris Diaz (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 2B) led the offense Saturday, as the 'Pack jumped out to an early 7-0 lead behind Carlos Rodon (7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) and held off Tech's comeback bid in the late innings. Diaz (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B) led the offense again Sunday behind Logan Jernigan (6 IP, 0 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 9 K), who pitched around six walks by holding the Yellow Jackets hitless for six innings."

Collegiate Baseball: Collegiate Baseball Top 30
"Several other teams have been impressive. Kentucky is still unbeaten with 16 straight wins to kick off the 2012 season. Wake Forest has won 13 straight and entered the poll at No. 24 after sweeping a 3-game series against Maryland. UCLA has won 10 consecutive games, including a 3-game sweep at Georgia over the past weekend while Florida St. has also won 10 straight. In top 30 games over the past weekend, Cal. St. Fullerton took two of three at Texas A&M, Stanford took two of three at home against Rice, North Carolina swept a 3-game series against Clemson and N.C. State won two of three against Georgia Tech. Three teams fell out of the top 30 in Clemson (1-3 last week), Maryland (2-3) and Gonzaga (0-3). New to the poll this week is N.C. State (11-3), Wake Forest (14-4), and Texas St. (11-4)."
Perfect Game: PG Top 50
"It's the year of surprises in the ACC. Maryland made a huge statement a few weeks ago with a road series win over UCLA. But even after the hot start, the Terrapins were trumped over the weekend when they were swept on the road by upstart Wake Forest, which entered this week's PG Top 50 rankings. Also in the ACC, N.C. State made a bold statement over the weekend with an impressive home series win over Georgia Tech, while Virginia Tech's bid to earn an impressive road series win over Virginia failed."
