The Seminoles struck first in the top of the second inning. Surkamp walked Dennis Guinn to lead off and then surrendered a hit by Jason Stidham to right-center field. Stidham took second on the throw back to the infield, leaving runners on second and third. Travis Anderson reached on an error by NC State third baseman Drew Martin, advancing Stidham to third and scoring Guinn for the first run of the night. One out later, a sacrifice fly by Reichert scored Stidham to make it 2-0.
The Wolfpack cut the lead into half in the bottom of the second. Ryan Pond led off with a walk, then moved to third on groundouts by Pat Ferguson and Caleb Mangum. Roskopf doubled to left-center next to score Pond.
NC State tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when Henry walked Pond to lead off and Ferguson doubled to left-center field to bring Pond across the plate. A groundout by Mangum advanced Ferguson to third with one out. Roskopf then teed one off to right-center for an RBI-double that scored Ferguson and gave the Wolfpack a 3-2 lead.
FSU knotted it back up at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Tony Thomas Jr. led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a groundout by Mark Hallberg. A double by Posey down the left-field line scored Thomas. Shunick, who entered in the sixth, intentionally walked Jack Rye and surrendered a single to short by Guinn that loaded the bases with only one out.
The Wolfpack brought in Andrew Taylor at that point, and he walked Stidham to advance force in a run. Kyle Rutter replaced Taylor to face a new designated hitter in Tommy Oravetz, who then singled through the right side, scoring both Rye and Guinn and advancing Stidham to third. With two outs and runners on the corners, Reichert doubled down the right-field line, scoring both Stidham and Oravetz to give FSU a commanding 8-3 lead.
