Turner Captures ACC Player of the Week Honor
April 16, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State freshman third baseman Trea Turner earned Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week honors, announced Monday by the conference office.
Turner tied an ACC single-game record with five stolen bases in Friday night’s game at Clemson. With nine steals in four games, Turner matched Brett Williams’ team-leading season total from a year ago, while improving to an NCAA leading 38-for-39 on the season.
The freshman set the NC State single-season stolen base record with his 31st against Elon last Wednesday night and currently sits 25 stolen bases shy of the ACC record of 63 set by North Carolina’s Brian Roberts in 1998.
The Lake Worth, Fla., native is over halfway to the NC State career stolen base record of 73.
Aside from his ferocious base running, Turner lifted the Pack with Saturday’s biggest hit, a two-out, two-RBI double in the seventh inning, pushing home the game-tying and go-ahead runs in a 3-1 win at Clemson.
In the Pack's midweek game against Elon, Turner came a homerun away from hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double, a triple, and two stolen bases.
