    UNCG Drops Baseball, 5-3

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ray Quinones had two hits and drove in two runs, and five UNC Greensboro pitchers combined on a five-hitter Tuesday as the Spartans defeated NC State 5-3 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

UNCG improved to 15-19 with the victory, while the Wolfpack dropped to 19-22. Zach Furl, the second UNCG pitcher of the night, got credit for the win after pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He walked two and struck out three. He improved to 1-0. Joey Cutler, normally a reliever for the Wolfpack, started and took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits in five innings. His record dropped to 0-4.

The Wolfpack jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first against UNCG starter Brook Hassebrook.  Pratt Maynard singled, Drew Poulk walked, and Pat Ferguson sliced a two-out, opposite-field two-run double into the left-field corner.

Cutler retired UNCG in order in the first and second, but the Spartans sliced the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third on a foul sacrifice fly by Brent O’Berry, then took the lead with a three-run fourth. Pedro Leon led off and walked, and Ray Quinones drove him home with a double down the right-field line. Drew Gehringer walked and the runners moved up to second and third on a fly ball to right field. Bradley Raynor grounded to shortstop to drive in Leon, and Gehringer came around to score when shortstop Dallas Poulk’s throw was over the head of Ferguson at first base.

Corey Overholtzer stroked a one-out single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth and stole second base. Quinones’s two-out single off the glove of Ferguson brought Overholtzer home and gave the Spartans a 5-2 lead.

Kyle Wilson worked reliever Warren Slack for a two-out walk in the top of the sixth and stole second base. Chris Schaeffer’s single to left field scored Wilson from second to cut the lead to two runs at 5-3.

The Wolfpack had its chances, advancing runners into scoring position in every inning except the third, fifth and ninth, but the UNCG bullpen combined to limit the Pack to a run on three hits over the final 7 1/3 innings.

NC State will return to action this weekend in a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Virginia. Game times are 7 p.m. on Friday, and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. WKNC-FM (88.1) will air all three games live, and all three broadcasts will be available on-line at gopack.com via Pack Pass.
