RALEIGH, N.C. - Top-seeded NC State (39-17) takes on Sacred Heart Friday at 7 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park in the Wolfpack's first game of the 2012 NCAA Championship's Raleigh Regional.
The Pack's Vance Williams (3-3, 3.31 ERA) will start Friday's game as State begins its quest for the program's first College World Series bid since 1968. The last time NC State advanced to a super regional coincided with its last appearance as a regional host, in 2008.
The Wolfpack will be led by a pair of newly christened All-Americans, Carlos Rodon and Chris Diaz. Rodon became the first Wolfpack freshman to make an All-America first team, and Diaz earned a second team shortstop mention on the Louisville Slugger team Thursday.
Over the last 23 games, Diaz holds a .396 batting average. That spike in offensive production came with a move to second in the batting order, where he follows base-clogger Trea Turner. Turner leads the nation with 55 stolen bases, and finished the regular season ranked fifth in the ACC with a .450 OBP.
Slugger Ryan Mathews will look to rebound from having a 21-game hitting streak snapped in the ACC Tournament. Mathews's streak officially came to an end when the redshirt senior drew a game-winning, bases loaded walk in the Pack's victory over Miami. Mathews finished the year third in the conference and 21st in the nation with 14 home runs, six of which have come in the Pack's last 10 games.
NC State holds a 25-4 record at Doak Field at Dail Park in 2012, and brings an 11-game home winning streak into the regional. Wolfpack batters have hit 23 of the Pack's 35 home runs at home, and 16 in State's last 16 contests (both home and away).
Every game of the Raleigh Regional will stream from GoPack.com. Live radio coverage of all of NC State's games will be provided by 88.1 WKNC, fans can follow Twitter updates from @NCStateBaseball, and live stats will be available on GoPack.com.
